The sleep cycle: light sleep, deep sleep, and REM explained

How your night is built from cycles of about 90 minutes with light sleep (N1/N2), deep sleep (N3), and REM — and why waking up briefly is normal.

While you sleep, your brain does anything but nothing. Your night is not an even line, but a succession of cycles that carry you again and again through lighter and deeper stages of sleep. Understanding how that sleep cycle works helps you understand why some nights you wake up rested and why waking up briefly in the middle of the night is not strange at all. This article explains the stages — light sleep, deep sleep, and REM — and how they are distributed across the night.

The four stages of sleep

Sleep researchers classify sleep using the standard of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), based on brain activity (EEG), eye movements, and muscle tension [5]. There are four stages: three non-REM stages (N1, N2, N3) and REM sleep [2].

  • N1 — falling-asleep stage. The transition from waking to sleep. This stage is very light and usually lasts only one to seven minutes. You can still be woken easily and often don't notice yourself that you were already sleeping. N1 is only a small part of the night.
  • N2 — light sleep. The stage where you spend the largest part of your night: about 45 to 55 percent. Your heart rate and body temperature drop, and short, characteristic patterns appear in your brain (sleep spindles and K-complexes). N2 is not "lesser" sleep — it's the backbone of your night [2].
  • N3 — deep sleep. The deepest, most restorative sleep, also called deep or slow-wave sleep. Your breathing is slow and even, your heart beats calmly, and you're hard to wake. N3 makes up about 15 to 25 percent of the night.
  • REM — dream sleep. During REM sleep (rapid eye movement) your brain is actually very active: you dream vividly, your eyes move quickly behind your eyelids, and your heart rate and breathing become irregular. At the same time your muscles are almost paralyzed, so that you don't act out your dreams. REM is about 20 to 25 percent of an adult night.

What does deep sleep do for your body?

Deep sleep is the stage most associated with physical recovery. In N3, your brain activity drops to slow, large waves, growth hormone is released, and your body gets the chance to recover [1]. If you're woken from deep sleep, you often feel groggy and disoriented — that "leaden" feeling. Important: you can't force deep sleep. Your brain regulates the distribution itself, and after sleep deprivation it makes up deep sleep first in the following night.

Deep sleep comes first, REM comes later

The distribution across the night is not even. The first cycles contain the longest and deepest N3 periods, and as the night progresses, deep sleep gets shorter and REM gets longer [2]. That's why the second half of your night is rich in dreams — and why in the morning you often remember your last dream best.

What does REM do for your mind?

Where deep sleep is mainly connected with physical recovery, REM sleep plays a role in processing emotions and consolidating memory. Research into the memory function of sleep shows that both deep sleep and REM contribute to consolidating what you've learned during the day: your brain "sorts" and stores information while you sleep [3]. A night with too little sleep often cuts precisely into REM and deep sleep, which explains why after a short night you feel not only tired but also forgetful and irritable.

The roughly 90-minute cycle

The stages don't follow one another randomly, but in cycles. A typical cycle runs from light sleep (N1, N2) to deep sleep (N3) and ends with a period of REM. Such a complete round lasts about 90 minutes on average, with a normal range of around 80 to 120 minutes [2]. Most adults go through four to six cycles per night [4].

Those cycles are not identical. Early in the night there's a lot of deep sleep; later in the night the balance shifts toward more N2 and longer REM periods. So your sleep is dynamic: not a flat line, but an undulating pattern that slowly becomes "lighter" toward morning.

How much sleep do you "need"?

For most adults, the recommended amount is between seven and nine hours per night. Within that time, your body itself regulates how much deep sleep and REM you get — you don't have to (and can't) steer it. The share of deep sleep also gradually decreases with age, which is a normal part of getting older and no sign that anything is wrong [1]. So focus less on isolated "stage percentages" and more on the question: do I feel rested during the day?

Myth: waking up at night means a bad night

Everyone wakes up very briefly several times between sleep cycles — often only seconds, usually at the end of a cycle [2]. Usually you don't remember those moments and in the morning you think you slept uninterrupted. So waking up briefly is simply part of it. It only becomes a complaint when you lie awake from it for a long time and become restless because of it.

Why waking up briefly is normal

The feeling that you "lay awake all night" rarely matches what actually happens. Brief waking moments are a normal part of sleep architecture and even increase slightly with age. They only become a problem when you have trouble falling back asleep and tension arises. If you start worrying about the alarm clock or about "how many hours do I still have," you actually keep yourself awake.

In short: your night is a finely tuned system of stages and cycles that your brain regulates itself. Light sleep is not wasted time, deep sleep restores your body, REM tends to your mind — and waking up briefly is simply part of the deal.
